Artifact III. a. - Research designs appropriate to quantitative and qualitative research questions

Quantitative Research Design

Statistical Analysis Portfolio

Both artifacts demonstrate the process of which design is appropriate based on the research questions.

Artifact III. b. - Univariate and multivariate research designs and data analysis methods

Statistical Analysis Portfolio

In this portfolio, an analysis of a given dataset using a variety of statistical tests: Correlations, Independent, Repeated Measures, ANOVA, ANCOVA, and Between-Subjects.

Artifact III. c. - Qualitative designs and approaches to qualitative data analysis

Research Identity Memo

Critical Synthesis Paper

Critical Synthesis Paper Graded Rubric

The Research Identity Memo is a common method used in Qualitative Analysis to remain aware of your biases throughout the qualitative research process. The second artifact is the synthesis paper which described the benefits and designs of qualitative research.

Artifact III. d. - Emergent research practices and processes

Research Identity Memo

Research Identity Memo Graded Rubric

This artifact describes one of the many qualitative research methods. The researcher stays aware throughout the process, taking note of any biases or perceptions about expected results.

Artifact III. e. - Models and methods of instrument design

Statistical Analysis Portfolio

Quantitative Research Proposal

Both artifacts describe the methods involved in choosing instruments in quantitative research

Artifact III. f. - Models and methods of program evaluation

Qualitative Research Proposal

This artifact describes the process of conducting qualitative research from beginning to completion

Artifact III. g. - Research questions appropriate for professional research and publication

Qualitative Research Proposal

This artifact demonstrates the process of choosing a research topic, and formulating research questions. Also, this was the beginning of the manuscript that was submitted for publication.

Artifact III. h. - Professional writing for journal and newsletter publication

Cover Letter for Journal Publication

During the Dissemination of Research class, I led a writing team that produced the manuscript: Supporting International Doctoral Students in CES Programs. The cover letter demonstrates what was sent to the journal publication, thus providing practice of the professional writing for a journal.

Artifact III. i. - Professional conference proposal preparation

Conference Presentation Proposal

This Presentation Proposal was designed for the ACES Conference on the topic: The Creative Supervisor: Taking Supervision to Another Level. I worked with a group to put together the proposal.

Artifact III. j. - Design and evaluation of research proposals for a human subjects/institutional review board

review

Qualitative Research Proposal

Quantitative Research Design

Both artifacts demonstrated the steps of research for qualitative and quantitative proposal; choosing topics, writing the research questions, and which instruments. This process really helped me to understand and practice the steps.

Artifact III. k. - Grant proposals and other sources of funding

CRS Grant Application

This artifact shows the process of applying for a grant.

Artifact III. l. - Ethical and culturally relevant strategies for conducting research

Supporting International Doctoral Students in CES Programs

This artifact demonstrated my understanding of cultural strategies and learning more about the research of studying abroad for myself and many other international students.

Reflection

Reflect on the process of developing leadership level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency.

1. What has been especially impactful/meaningful/important to you personally and professionally?

The importance of research became apparent. Throughout the quantitative, qualitative and dissemination of research courses, I discovered a genuine interest and desire to conduct research and write about it well. My experience with research prior to beginning this PH.D program was limited, and the activities and assignments brought the idea to life and ignited a passion. Personally, I feel strongly about conducting research among the population I live in,  and using the data to inform my clinical practice.

2. Describe an area of strength that you have developed while in the program in this area of competency. What is one way you plan to utilize this strength in your vocation?

Reading has always been a strength, and I have seen my love my reading grow. Research involves not only reading copious amounts of scholarly literature but also synthesizing it well in a well-written manuscript. The process is both powerful and inspirational. I plan to continue reading diverse articles to increase my knowledge base on a weekly basis.

3. Describe an area of challenge/growth opportunity in this area of competency. What is your plan to develop excellence in this area?

Writing has been a tremendous challenge! The process of producing a succinct, informed manuscript at times were overwhelming. This is an area that I need to practice and push myself. Future plans to develop this area include continuous writing and submitting to journals, and consistent reading so that I can learn efficient ways of writing scholarly.

4. Reflect on how faith in Christ relates to this competency.

Luke 14:28 – For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? This verse encourages me when I consider research, and scholarship. Laying a solid foundation leads to other areas of fruitfulness. In counselling my goals are to help clients well, as a counsellor educator I want to educate future counsellors, and good research helps to accomplish both goals. I will continue to learn and integrate best practices, and sharing information and data with future students helps to build their foundation. Research and Scholarship serve as the building blocks.
